MEDIA RELEASE – 27 November 2016

Retail and Fast Food Workers Union Welcomes Greens Pay Protection Bill

Calls For Bipartisan Support

The Retail and Fast Food Workers Union welcomes news that the Greens will move an amendment to the Fair Work Act on Monday 28 November 2016. That amendment will have the effect of returning over $300 Million in weekend, weeknight, overtime, shift, casual and other loadings to retail and fast food workers throughout Australia. The Union has been running a campaign to fix the pay loophole in s. 206.

“We are delighted that the Greens have stepped up to the plate and proposed to fix section 206.” Said Josh Cullinan, Secretary of the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union.

“By protecting the full rate of pay, hundreds of thousands of retail and fast food workers will no longer have more than one million dollars taken from their pay packets every day,” said Josh Cullinan, Secretary of the Retail and Fast Food Workers Union.

“We know that over 100 dodgy deals done by the SDA are undercutting the minimum rates of pay and this legislation will fix that.”

“These workers were never told the truth – penalty rates and other conditions were cut in secret deals.” Said Josh Cullinan. “The biggest offenders are Coles, Woolworths and McDonald’s.”

“We call on all parties to back the legislation and fix section 206. Our members deserve nothing less.”

“We will not rest until all the penalty rates taken from our members have been returned.” Said Mr Cullinan.
